S1 Qualifier at Rowrah 12.3.00
Jason Gardner in ICA and Peter Mitchell in Junior TKM set themselves well on the road for Super 1 qualification with wins at Rowrah and one more to go. Gardner, no stranger to top places in Super 1, won two heats to earn pole, and was never challenged on his way to the win. A slight drizzle halfway through the race made the karts handling look odd, but Iain Inglis, another heat winner, was not close enough to challenge. Leon Cooke won the B final on his trusty old AX6 after trying a Tonykart in practice, and sped up to 9th in the main final. Andrew Wilson and Wesley Jones won heats too, but Jones came off worst in a tangle with Ed Pead, the latter going off himself later on. A huge battle developed for third place between Barry Eldridge, Paul Railston another heat winner - and Simon Andrews. On his way from grid seventeen, Neil Walker leapfrogged past them all in the latter stages to claim the last podium place. Jonathan Robertson held pole in the larger Junior TKM class, other heat winners being Chris Renwick (twice), Jonathan Adam, Chris Coombes, Oliver Oakes and David Gregory. But Robertson was forced over the grass at the first corner dropping him way back. His recovery to fifth was exemplary. This left Coombes in the lead. David Gregory was showing good form as he forged past Coombes but when a sudden shower wet the track, he was the first to succumb, sliding off. Peter Mitchell inherited the lead, the Bacup lad keeping everything under control in the tricky conditions. Thomas Onslow-Cole found his set up well suited too, coming from the B Final win and the back of the grid to a great second place, ahead of Danny Cruttenden and Benjy Russell. Intercontinental A
