....first test the Alfano by shorting the socket where the cable actually plugs in.

Wait for say 10 secs in between each time you short it.

If the Alfano is ok, it should register a lap time after you have shorted it enough times in relationship to the number of timing strips set.

If it works, then connect the cable and short the end of the cable and follow the above procedure.

If it still works, then the pickup is the most likely culprit.

As Iant says, they are easy to repair for a few quid. I used to do them but found that people failed to pay even when it was dead cheap, so I don't do it anymore.
