Used to be the case that it was legal for road use if it had a BSI mark. This might have changed with the introduction of EU standards.

Having said that, I've seen guys riding in this area with gorgeous black Simpson Bandits and RX's and the plod haven't batted an eyelid. Ł400 Simpson or Ł30 plastic lid - one has the right standard, the other hasn't, I know which one I'd choose..
