Hi James, new my self here so won't be able to offer you much information,but,what people will be needing is things like your age and location.
There are so many variables you may be surprised. One piece of info I can give you though is don't buy the first kart you see ,it may be pretty and pristine ,but not legal to race. grab a cup of tea ,sit back and relax ,read through the threads and digest.

You will also find quite a lot of info on Starting karting on the MSA website.
