Best advice I can offer is to go to a local circuit on a practice day and talk to some cadet dads (and mums) in the paddock.
There are kart shops at many of the circuits who are a good source of help as well as the circuits themselves. People will want you to enjoy karting, but to be safe for the sake of you and others. DONT go buying stuff until you have spoken to lots of people.
