There's no problem at all with using small trailers. In fact, they're probably a better option if your tow car is small or a low powered FWD.

I use a Noval Portaflot with a plywood cover and a little metal frame to sit the kart on. That trailer's very small and I can put the heavy stuff inside with the kart [Rotax Max or TKM] sitting on top. I use a SEAT Ibiza as a tow car and it'll happily drag the trailer and a fully loaded car at full chat on the motorway, up hills etc...

Your best bet is to pick up a trailer with a frame already built for the kart... so keep your eyes wide open on eBay.
