NJB uses the more 'empirical system'. He simply asks .... 'does it WORK?'
It's possible that long hubs make it LESS stiff but I suspect they make the axle STIFFER!
My implication was that if long hubs make it STIFFER, then what is the effect if you only use those hubs with a single clamp bolt: are THEY still stiffer? What about fitting a stiffer axle? What bout if you whole SETUP is too stiff already? What about if the wheels you chose for your long hubs were LESS stiff?
However (again trying to compliment NJB so that he can SEE I am not trying to be rude...) his method WORKS better than either your or mine!
