I tow a reasonable size twin axle trailer behind my Alfa 159, 1.9 diesel 150BHP. Without the trailer I get 48ish, with the trailer fitted on a calm day I can get 30 - 32mpg. On a windy day heading to Scotland recently I was getting 16 - 17mpg, so count yourself lucky!!!!
Its a company car with paid fuel so I don't have the same concerns as you...... no good for the Polar Bears though!!
