Axle - how soft can you go?

i run a gillard and at buckmore last weekend (hot/dry 23 degrees) i went from a medium cut down axle to the next down, soft and cut down and it was ok for a while until the main final and my boy said the rear was starting to grip up again and it was hard to get out of the 2nd hairpin, so, could i go even softer? and is there a limit to how soft before it stops working/releasing etc?
