A 'caravan' battery (ie a leisure battery) is designed internally to discharge a relatively low current over a long period of time. A car battery to discharge a very heavy current over a short period of time (starter motor)
Not sure about your query on the charging amps, would normally expect the ammeter to show a high current to begin with,(the actual current I guess would depend on state of battery and charger rating) falling off as the battery charges.
