What generator size to run a small compressor ?

Could someone advise me what size geny i would require to run a kettle,hot air gun and a small compressor,not all at the same time !.
I popped into my local machine mart yesterday for some advice,i am looking at their small 1.5hp bandit compressor to buy and the spoty sales guy reckons i will need a 5KV geny just to run the compressor i am not an expert but that seems a bit OTT.
Any advice would be grateful,on a tightish budget and is to be used once or twice a month.
