F.Y.I. I've just sent off the following e-mail to the MSA.

Dear Sir / Madam (safety@msauk.org),

cc: George Robinson

My son is a 2009 MSA National Kart B licence holder and I wish to raise concerns & suggestions regarding Kart Front Fairing incidents.

Other karters, parents and myself have witnessed numerous ZIP Storm kart nose fairing shovelling incidents on track this season which only through good fortune have not lead to flips or driver injuries. Two notable incidents which did lead to injury are;

Last Sunday 1-nov at Rissington the Cadet final featured a race stoppage to an incident on track. A parent’s summing up [1]; “…

There were certainly a lot of photos being taken of the Zip kart in the scrutineering area and it was held there for some time for inspection. This time it was the Zip driver who appeared to suffer the most with the kart looking a write-off - nose cone and nasser panel badly damaged and chassis twisted. The WTP kart that ran into him (Zip facing the wrong way) went right up the nasser panel and took chunks out of the side of the lad's helmet but luckily seems to have hit the side rather than full on. The WTP lad walked away but with a badly damaged kart and a destroyed Mychron/Alfano (hit by his helmet). The Zip driver was airlifted to hospital but released with bumps and bruising. Not sure about the third driver involved who was also in the ambulance. …

Monday 31-Aug Honda Cadet Heat 2 at Rowrah, there was a 1st lap incident [2] on track. Kart no.21 had spun to face oncoming traffic. Kart no.30 collided some 20 degrees off head on. No.30 rode up the Nassau panel hitting the steering wheel and bending the left hand side of the steering wheel back approx 60 degrees. Driver no.21 suffered a light sprain to left wrist. Kart no.30 was recovered from mounted position by a race marshal. My concern here is that with a small additional momentum kart no.30 could have continued its trajectory to hit driver no.21’s helmet, with subsequent potential neck injury.

The 8-Sep-2009 Motor Sports Council ‘blue book’ regulation changes [3] for 2010
/a/ make no mention of ZIP Storm kart nose fairing issues. This was disappointing reading.
/b/ states that for Safety Issues “… the Motor Sports Council without consultation may ratify regulation changes involving issues of safety …”

I am aware that John Ryan (MSA), John Symes (MSA) and Andrew Mellor (FIA Institute) are investigating cadet kart bodywork homologation & may propose head-on crash tests [4]. Could you please identify the progress made with the cadet kart bodywork homologation and head-on crash tests; and what timescales apply ?.

Until homologation revision, could you issue a temporary safety based rule to mandate an alternate fairing; e.g. the Dartford Karting solution [5] ?. Such safety-based direction would have a minimal financial impact on ZIP Storm karters due to the reduced number of races occurring as the 2009 season draws to a close.

The MSA must act fast to reduce the frequency of karts being flipped, and karts riding up upon each other due to front fairing design. Whilst I applaud the MSA’s progress with helmet regulation changes, a stronger helmet will not prevent a driver’s neck being broken.

So much MSA effort seems to be on rule refinements and on expanding the sport (e.g. introduction of Bambino class). It is a pity that urgency does not seem to be applied to protection of child (under 15) drivers.

I would appreciate a reply on these matters.
