We started karting at Pfi Buttons 2 years ago. It is a good platform to get you in to karting and it helps to see if you and your child want to take things further and go racing. It is also good fun, and a good place to meet like minded novice drivers and parents.
What are they learning? All time in the seat is a continual learning experiance. The more the better we have found. The 'mini races' at Buttons give you an chance to practise starts and race in a group like the real thing. Where else can you learn this in a controlled environment for a reasonable price. With the scheme sometimes attracting 50+ drivers at a time, with various abilities, it would be very hard to teach individuals the finer points of the track. I think the idea is to give as many youngsters as much track time as possible and have fun.
If your child has mastered all the basics and you are lapping in the 56 to low 57 second bracket on a dry day, have a chat with Mike in the shop. He can arrange one to one tuition and sole use of the circuit for 1 hour training sessions. We have found this very worth while. You learn the circuit lines and don't move on to another corner until the prevoius one is mastered. You will need a few sessions to complete the whole of the Pfi circuit as there is a lot to learn.
You will get to a stage where you will out grow Buttons and you go racing. When this happens, I feel that's when the scheme has done it's job, and you move on to the next challenge making way for new novices.
Mixing with faster drivers will improve your childs skills so maybe a regular practise Saturday at Pfi would be beneficial. It can be daunting with quicker drivers around you, but you can learn from their lines. If you want to start racing at a slightly lower more relaxed level, try out Tattershall or Woodthorpe kart clubs in Lincolnshire.
You are not missing anything. Buttons has got you in to karting and hopefully you are enjoying it all so far.
