Aquila pointed out the most simple and effective test.

Lay the chain flat and bend, or hold up in the hand to see the "bow" due to wear (or poor chain quality).
As Aquila stated, the greater the "bow" the more worn is the chain.

It was always one of the trusted methods used to check motorbike chains for wear: the principle is the same.
Never lost a chain on a bike due to wear in 46 years!!
