That is how it used to be, similar to KF classes, open competition on engines/chassis - and TKM as the budget class.

100cc karting was seen as too unreliable and expensive because of it (it was not once it went watercooled). TKM was seen as old fashioned.

Rotax nailed karting with all that Rotax Max promised to be - Super Cheap (Ha!), Super Reliable (yes ok), Equal equipment (Ha!). Its not everything it promised, and because of its constant changes requires money to be spent on updated parts. Rotax is a good idea in principle - but its nothing more TKM was, TKM just missed the boat.
