1) You may have done it hundreds of times but I have SEEN karts vibrate FORWARD until the rear tyres MEET the 4x4 and, either, 'fire' that backward into your ankles and THEN shoot forward OR simply ROCKET forward. Your assumption is that you can NEVER have the throttle stuck open.... If a piece of debris jams the slide, then you CAN be at full throttle with no outward sign of the slide being open. The vibration from a single cylinder 2 stroke at FULL throttle is PLENTY strong enough to jump off a 4x4! Do I need to explain the EFFECT of a FULL THROTTLE 250cc driverless kart running 'free' in a crowded paddock......

2) Having seen MORONS driving karts with no sleeves, gloves and even NO SHIRT AT ALL. Having seen drivers test their karts WITHOUT THEIR HELMET. Having SEEN someone lose two fingers in a kart chain. Having SEEN people using a hot-air gun and/or LIGHTING A CIGARETTE while refueling. Having seen people drive karts with SCARVES on. Having seen people driving 125cc karts with INFANTS on their laps....... and so on........ and so on.,....

.....in my 50 karting years, I have WATCHED the results of the 'start with a rope' result. I have watched people use TOW ROPES and loop the excess rope ROUND THEIR SHOULDERS. I've SEEN them wind the rope 2 or 3 TIMES round their hands. I've have also WATCHED while someone was WOUND IN BY THEIR 100cc kart.... and watched them loaded into an ambulance with a CRUSHED arms (broken in about 20 places!).

I have also watched people starting karts with ropes ON STANDS in the middle of a paddock. I have WATCHED CLUTCHED karts started with ropes without the user realising the throttle was stuck open and seen the kart BURY itself UNDER A CAR. 5 Minutes previously, the owner had been trying to start his kart (and, luckily FAILING) while his 4 or 5 year old son was SAT IN THE SEAT unable to reach the pedals. 5 Mins later, when it DID start, luckily, the son was NOT in the seat.......

So...... YES....I DO think my view that SOME people DO stupid things is probably pretty damned well justified by EXPERIENCE of seeing them DO it!!!. Not EVERYBODY does stupid things but SOMEONE ALWAYS does something stupid, eventually!

You know, some people are SO stupid that I have actually SEEN start their karts while balancing them on blocks WITHOUT 2 assistants....

However, if you are one of the guys at Kimbolton who start their 250cc that way, then they do it in about the safest way.... they have TWO ASSISTANTS to the puller.....

If you DON'T have two assistants available..... DON'T DO IT!

Finally, my caps lock MAY be annoying but not HALF as annoying, or DANGEROUS, as people advising LESS experienced people to do something in a LETHAL manner!

When you wrote the above advice, and, until I corrected you, you did NOT warn people that a rope is NOT safe. You did NOT warn them that you should only wind it ONCE round the wheel. You did NOT warn them to use a SHORT rope. You did NOT warn them about NOT winding it around their hands. You did NOT advise them to CHECK that the throttle was NOT jammed open....... etc., etc.. I think your advice placed them at UNACCEPTABLE RISK! More importantly, I think you placed the REST of us in the PADDOCKS at unacceptable risks! YOU have assumed that people WON'T do stupid things..... those of us with 50 years experience know that.... SOME.... PEOPLE.... DO!

Hence my warnings for which I do NOT apologise!

Ian
