Ian, thanks for the respect implied in answering constructively and ( a little) more openly.
Yes - I can state exactly the same as you. Total independence. (dammit - another income stream would be so helpful!)
The link is there - Go on that companies website (see no names mentioned - you are a much better ad for them than I!) click on the product (Moto R is the automotive one - It appears to be where they are building their reputation on tarmac - Don't tell me "its not the karting one" - I know that, but we both agree that until there is testing the kart one cannot be approved by CIK / MSA et al. If they are successful in auto racing, their financial ability to get accreditation for our "niche market" will increase) click on "click here for SFI certification" etc. See - No insider knowledge - I even learned to click a mouse myself!
And.. just once more for good measure - I am not promoting the product of that company or any company.
I repeat for the third and final time my view - and for anyone else still following this -
"Draw your own conclusions from the EVIDENCE you can find on the net and elsewhere, and from your experience of the type of accident that occurs in karting"
Yes - I have personal experience -which is evidence not proof- of crashes in three different motorsports with and without a head movement restricting device and have witnessed several more, so I have naturally formed a view. And that view is that without rigid device such as the one we are discussing, painful, debilitating whiplash lasting around a week occurs in a significant proportion -though not the majority- of incidents where the neck is substantially twisted or decelerated sharply through transferred or direct impact, with rapid onset that normally prevents continuing in the days competition. (thankfully nothing more serious)
With a device, no whiplash effect is experienced but normally (majority of cases) a large bruise develops at the load spreading points of the body where the device has apparently transferred the torque away from the weakest structure in the load path (neck). Continued racing has always been possible on the day.
Even if you argue that there is not enough evidence to draw definite conclusion on a dozen or so incidents, ask, yourself, from engineering, classical physics or common sense terms of reference, if the device had not taken the force from the impact on the helmet into its frame, rather than allowing it through your weaker frame, how has it then transferred such a significant blow to the larger, more able to cope upper trunk?
I don't want to push my view down peoples throats, but feel obliged to contribute when in a post about an issue I've some experience of, the naysayers and NIMBY's get the upper hand.
I, like many others, resented the imposition of the Uk motorcycle helmet law, but when I look back at the number of times I believe I would have been history without it, and the consequent emergence of excellent companies such as Arai, I am glad someone else was far sighted enough to do it.
All the best,
Jon
