The biggest problem in that respect is the confusion between winning and having fun. Karting is a hobby for almost every participant involved. In other words we do it because we enjoy it. Speak to anyone involved in the sport for a long time and they'll exude passion for it.

Few will ever win in karting. Fewer still will step onto the ladder into cars. Fewer still will become Formula One drivers. However for many its this last aspiration that quickly draws them into MSA karting. It also has them sinking gargantuan sums into ridiculous less of 'professionalism'. And eventually its the failure to succeed that has them loosing interest and leaving the sport.

Extoling the virtues of having fun is something that leisure karting has done really well. There isn't the same level of seriousness there and that's why it is many times more successful than the MSA scene.

There's a lot we can do to improve MSA club karting so that we do retain people for the long term... and surely that has to be an objective worth striving for for everyone.
