In karting, to win you have to have the complete package. Your chassis, preparation, driving and engines have to be spot on. Most people wanting to compete at the front can afford a new chassis. Preparation is something that can be learned. Driving is something that can be learned. Top engines can only be bought; and that is the problem.

Sure, the difference in a top engine compared to a merely good one may be small, and most drivers possibly wouldn't even notice the difference, but when your competition is equally as good and equally as well prepared, how good your engines are shows up. It's big money to get the top engines.

With respect to the "cheating" aspect (a term bandied around far too often for my liking), if everyone is doing it (e.g. kerb jumping) you have no choice but to copy, if you want to win. Sure, some may jump up and down and say you could protest the whole grid, but in the real world that's just not going to happen. With respect to deliberately flouting the technical regs in order to gain an advantage, I think it's far less prevalent than widely believed but, in the wider motor racing community, is largely ignored so long as the cheques keep coming; hence why some see it as a risk worth taking.
