Good points raised by richydehav, though wheel contamination should not be a problem since the tyre will absorb all of the softening fluid. Good idea to wipe off the wheel surfaces though once you have removed treated tyres.

Used sparingly, I would say that the use of tyre softener keeps the grip up to new tyre spec. If I used too much, too frequently, then the "tread" would go too soft, particularly with SL6's.
