In my experience the only time new tyres really make a difference is when timed qualfying is used. IMO it's another reason for the move towards this type of racing as it feeds even more money to the karting business.

At least for Cadet age, it's a slippery slope as well, with those with no budget restrictions putting on new tyres for every practice section in order to optimise their set up for qualy. Last year I came away from a French championship round at our local track with 30 sets of 1 or 2 session, cadet size Bridgestones.

If there was any sense in the rule makers, they would demand that the warm up was done on the new control tyres, so that qualy was only done on at least scrubbed rubber.

Having said that it would spoil the satisfaction of taking Pole on used rubber, with all the competition on new tyres.
