Ian thank you very much for your detailed comments and advice, it's much appreciated. I'll let you know how I get on. I would like to think I'm more than capable of what you said.

Thanks AMB, is hacksawing it into pieces really an option? I think I should have done that staight away! I presume I'd need to file off the sawn edge so that no swarf damages the surface of the inside race of the bearing?
