Compromising on your own safety is one thing, compromising on your child's safety is something far more irresponsible. If No1 son outgrew his helmet and I knew it's history I wouldn't hesitate passing it to No2 son, but I'd certainly not buy an unknown used helmet for my child.
Going back to the original poster I guess my attitude above (and others like me) reduces the market and therefore the price of used helmets. On a more positive note I was in the same position 12 months ago and was told their heads don't grow very quickly after about 8, and a helmet should last 2 or 3 years. Eldest son's Arai certainly still fits comfortably after 1 year.
