Well if you want an answer, from memory, the groove must contact the pad at its point closest to the centre of the disc.
This will radiate the gasses and any dust that is created, to the outer edge of the disc.
Also heps with wet conditions.
Except if mounting this way would cause the centre to then draw air in.
There are some disc that go against the grain, as it were.
We find soft pads are better in the Exprit(Tony) caliper.
A hard high sintered content tends to overheat the caliper and cause boiling of the fluid because of the heat tranfer, so now we use a soft resin/copper mix that we had made.
Still, he's probably got bored ad trotted off and fitted by now.
