The 'acceptable' stretch on a chain is 1 to 1.5%. That means on any chain if it seems to have 'grown' a link then it is time to replace it.

Clearly this is only if all the links seem evenly worn. If any link has a roller cracked or missing or the edge of the chain is abraded and rough or there are links that won't move easily, then it needs replacing too.

Worn chains are often the result of worn sprockets or may cause worn sprockets too.
