invader and quick old timer are both correct, you will not be able to remove the main polystyrine shell so it must be masked up so no solvent or thinner vapours can get to it. you must seal any vents to stop contamination as well. you can paint polycarbonate helmets but you must put use an isolator first such as a water based basecoat(min 3 coats) before putting a solvent based paint over the top. it probably wouldnt be cost affective though as polycarbonate helmets are normally cheap. just to add i would stay away from using any etch primers as these contain chemicals designed to etch into the under coats of the helmet, which could weaken it.
