as you are seeing lighter does not always mean faster. There are many 177 rotax drivers who are faster than 162 rotax drivers and thats 15 kg difference.
This is a variable which is could depend on many things mainly track layout. If the track is fast and flowing then the weight difference would be as important as say rye house which is tight and twisty.
You ll probably find your son has got used to the kart with weight on and adapted his driving, braking etc to suit the kart which will handle differently with the weight off. If your son is quicker with it on then leave it.. even try adding more weight .. you never know
