Sometimes the opposite could be true if its for a heavier driver. I used to use a smaller rear sprocket with a smaller front and it seemed to work for me. You may be stronger or weaker on certain parts of the track, but it might work better than just going with the pack.
As usual, the best advice is to test both on track and see what works for you.
