Maxxis Red Wet. Grip?

We have this year gone over to JTKM from Minimax. We have found that we can not get any grip out of the Maxxis Red Wets. The lap times are
bad, and my son is constantly complaining of no grip. We are running a 2010 Octane RH1.
As a matter of comparison, we put on an old set of Vegas W2 leaving all the kart setting the same, and my son was 6 seconds
a lap faster with no real effort on his part. We put the Maxxis Red Wets back on, again changing nothing on the kart setup and
no grip, lap times were being beaten by the cadets. Am
I missing something, or are the Maxxis Red Wets realy this poor?
Any help or advise would be gratefully recieved.
