personally i would put him out on an old set of wets (even if its dry) because they are made out of a much softer compound and run them at around 25 psi.
this will give him a lot more grip especially at this time of year and will build up his confidence.
set the kart up and leave it alone even if the weather changes and just let them get some bum in seat time.
when they are lapping consistantly within about 3 seconds as the fast kids, start having a play around with the kart and record the results this will give you a indication if its helping them improve.
