To start with, I spent a year working in manufacturing of automotive prototype parts, some that I designed, some that I made (using various bits of equipment from lathes to 3D rapid prototype units) and some that I did both - all items had to be carefully priced and signed off by the head of dept. based on his assesment on whether it was worth going ahead - but you had know way of knowing that, so I shall forgive your remark :)

I don't think for one moment that anyone is overcharging for the spikes given the niche use that they have - my point was to ask whether they are needed at all, along with many other compulsory equipment purchases
