I suppose it goes back to why one has trophies. If it is to impress one's friends or family, one might as well go out and buy one. If it is to impress oneself, then would one be impressed by racing against 'real novices' and beating them? I know there are rules about being a novice, but you might find it well received to admit that you aren't a 'novice' and ask for the prize to be awarded to someone who was.
At a meeting a couple of years ago, a novice senior did well in his first race, but there weren't enough novices to qualify for a trophy. The real winner of the race unstuck the nameplate from his trophy (he has so many that all he keeps is the name plate) and informally awarded the novice with a 'best novice trophy' in front of the other drivers in his class.
The novice's pleasure was evident. This year the ex-novice did the same thing, having won a few trophies himself, for another novice who had had a bad day but done his very best. As he said, getting that first trophy, awarded by his fellow drivers meant as much to him as his first podium place.
Other people, I have heard, bitch because 'the cup wasn't big enough".
