Be careful! I am old and grumpy! Things that I dismiss (like seat stays) MAY work properly..... I have been wrong quite a few times in the past....... Don't take my word for anything, EITHER! Use YOUR common sense. If the advice sounds stupid..... it WILL be! Get the 'advisor' to tell you how this 'tweak' actually works..... and then listen to the answer..... some are quite HYSTERICALLY funny!

I have an old saying.....

80% of EVRYTHING said in karting is TRIPE. I just wish I knew WHICH 80%!

There's nothing wrong with your lad being inconsistent, yet....... Ayrton started that way too!

Bum-in-seat time is what he needs at the moment and there really IS no substitute.

By all means, adjust the kart before he's ready.... just don't expect to get any sensible info back.... as yet!

There's an easy one for you to try first: the amount that weight distribution fore-and-aft alters the handling...... and that's EXTREME!

For example, send him out in the damp/wet.... you'd expect himn to suffer understeer as he tries to turn-in. That's QUITE different from understeer THROUGH the corner, please note!

Now fit a fat, waterproofed (in a plastic bag) cushion behind his back so that he's 4 to 6 inches further forward...... then send him out again..... expect to have to go and collect him because he WILL spin because the front will now turn in MUCH too well and the rear will have no grip at all.... especially when he tries to accelerate out of the corner. You'll see how UN-subtle weight distibution (fore and aft) is! Its effect is HUGE! If it doesn't...... then he was too far forward (or backward!) to START with.......

***********

If you want to make him quicker..... try this!

:-

Find a long straight followed by a corner where you can legally stand alongside the track. Take a marker cone and go and stand where he brakes.

First, make sure there is ZERO gap between where he lifts the throttle and where he hits the brake. There MUST be Z*E*R*O gap...... no 'coasting'! 95% of newish karters have a gap........

Then walk a metre forward (towards the corner) and place cone there. Tell him he MUST not brake until he reaches the cone. Go stand and WATCH him and ENFORCE the rule!!If he get round the corner safely, even ONCE.... move it another metre and repeat for quite a long session. In the end, he WON'T make it.... do NOT move the cone! Tell him to keep trying until he CAN make it....... he WILL! And then move it another metre...... and so on!

You will also be watching 'quick' drivers at the same time.... watch where THEY brake...... Your lad will NOT be braking later than them and you'll know you've moved as far forward as possible when the cone is at the same place THEY brake! But only copy the BEST..... not the AVERAGE driver!

It's not unusual to find with a newish driver, that we can move the cone THIRTY metres in a DAY! What will happen is that he will learn to accelerate longer, brake later, corner faster and leave the corner FASTER..... and that'll take SECONDS off his lap time around the whole track as he'll use his new skills on the other corners as well!

That simple trick will take MUCH more time off his lap than will ANY of the chassis 'tuning' tricks unless there's something APPALLING on it at the moment!!
