If you are new to driving a racing kart definately start in cadets. You will learn your racing skills and are likely to race against drivers of similar standard and your dad will get to understand what is generally involved in racing a kart.
Mini Max is very competrative and the drivers have usually had experience Cadets. I think if you went straight out in a Mini Max it may not be the best first experience either you or your dad would have in karting.
