Many thanks for all the replies and very constructive comments.

Having weighed up all the options, I have decided to go for the Iame.

The reasoning behind this is:

1) The Comer engines that I have at the moment are reasonable and the carbs OK (dyno set etc), but to get them resealed and continued maintenance will be expensive and possibly 'dead money' to maintain the status quo.

2) Having spoken to several engine builders, the overwhelming response to the Iame is very positive, with the out of the box engines being very well built / machined and little or no difference between engines and carbs. The carbs are also far more reliable and better made as well as being more predictable. It would appear that a standard Iame is as fast, if not faster than a decent club level Comer, so in our situation would be a step forward. This also seems to be backed up by comments from people that have started running the Iame since its release.

3) As an inveterate tinkerer, the fact that I will be able to do regular servicing on the Iame myself without the need for resealing is very appealing. One of the reasons that the MSA stated that they were going down the path of non-sealed engines was to encourage a more 'hands on' approach to the engineering involved. I have no doubt that the builders will find some ways of tweaking the engines in the future, but with the smaller discrepancy between the parts being produced, it is likely that selecting parts will be less of an influence than with the Comers. Furthermore, the Iame parts that get replced on a regular basis (piston rings etc) are cheaper than the Comer.

4) As it would appear that we are in this for the long haul (!!) I would prefer to spend our limited testing time and resources in learning this new engine now, rather than later if the lad reaches the 'dizzying' heights of S1 in the future. There is no doubt that the MSA will continue to restrict the Hondas and Comers when the situation is reviewed in April to make sure that the Iame becomes and stays the faster engine.

5) Driver preference. My lad has driven both 2 and 4 stroke engines and prefers the 2 stroke engines. Furthermore, to change to 4 stroke would realistically mean a change of chassis - he is currently using a Zip Storm. I realise that the Honda is a good option and would be a serious consideration if we were just starting out, but it is very unclear what further restrictions will be imposed in the future. I feel that it is likely that any restriction that is just 'bolted on' will not allow the engine to deliver its best as well as just restricting the top end speed.

6) We have an engine builder local to us (BRT) who will also be present at Rissington club meetings, which means easier access to their help as and when we need it in the future.

Once again, thanks for all the responses to my original query and I hope that this (somewhat long winded !) reply is of help to anyone in the same situation as we are and are trying to decide which way to go. If we were in the lad's last season of cadets, there is no doubt that we would probably stay with the Comer, but as he is only 9 and has several years ahead, it is a different situation.

I will let you know how we get on once we start testing in the New Year - that's if the big bloke in the red suit doesn't get the exhaust stuck in the chimney at the end of the month......!

Perhaps £2500 for moving to IAME?  by 'mdc67'   (19 Dec 2012 @ 21:36)
