WD40 is not a lubricant as such. It is a Water Dispersant (hence the WD in the name) with a thin film agent to prevent subsequent corrosion from oxygen getting at 'bare' metal. It does not have the pressure additives needed to lubricate the bearing surfaces properly.

That said, if you leave off the sleeves you introduce so much contamination in the form of highly abrasive road dust that you are going to destroy any lubrication effect from no matter what product.

One theory says that the manufacturer puts in a grease which liquefies when hot, so that by the time you have done a rolling lap there is minimal friction, so you might as well leave the seals intact and benefit from the absence of lumps of grit in the bearing

The other theory says that the grease is designed for running for long periods at a standard speed and so is not ideal for karting, so taking the shields off means that you can spin the axle more freely.

Unfortunately removing the shield often damages them to the point that there is no point in replacing them and it is difficult to do with the bearing in place on the axle.

It's probably a practice that originated with one driver who won lots of races and it was attributed to his 'go faster' unshielded bearings. But they are designed for a 200,000 hour life at 2000 RPM. If you are going to change them after 40 hours you might as well lubricate them with emery dust, which is what taking the shields off amounts to. At least they will sound rough when you replace them!

One solution is to leave the shields in place but coat the outside of bearing with liquid glass like NanoPool. It stops the muck sticking to the bearing and it is an exotic German import, it must work!
