I think this question has generated some interesting answers but paul you should leave the genny as designed .The problem with connecting to earth as mdc67 says ,unless the earth connection and rcd is tested on every time its moved the rcd is useless and will actually make the generator more dangerous than with a non earthed system.Dewalt in America have had to recall their generators for having faulty rcd that would have never worked.
