I am more in the dark than you on electrics, but... I think we have the answer, which is:-

It depends!

It sounds as though it depends on the TYPE or MODEL of generator. I therefore would suggest that you call the manufacturer (if it's a quality make, e.g., Honda) and ask them.

If not, take it to someone who 'knows' (electrical engineering/repair company) and ask THEM. Near us, there's a company called Heasells who would be the right repople. They will be able to look at your genny and give you best advice.

I thik we've been told:

'It is not the same answer for all types of generator.'

I know that I will be Earthing my genny from now on. I can't think why I haven't before!
