Hi Brian,
At Teesside you'll get away with virtually any tyre on a Thunderkart clone though I suspect you've improved the power output. For the 570cc V Twin Briggs and Stratton Super Pro Kart I have, I found the old Junior Max tyres (Vega SL8) were a good compromise between grip and tyre life. Although I could gain almost a second a lap with the Vega SL6, it would destroy the front tyres due to the weight of the engine.
With your older tyres just take it steady for a couple of laps to scrub the surface and then go for it!
Graeme made a good call about the sets of tyres being checked for consistency - hadn't thought about that.
