Interesting, good to get people talking/ thinking and very well made . I enjoyed watching it . We come at it from low budget racing and by that I mean very few new chassis
( in 10 years of karting we have only ever bought 2 brand new chassis and one brand new engine )and both our boys have had reasonable sucess at national and clubbie level against other competitors where money is no object. We did do 2 years of Super 1 and I have to say that it is not value for money racing - ridiculous entry fees and even more ridiculous fuel prices. We probably spent more than we should have done in those 2 years but it is all relative to the starting budget - no where near to the £25-30000 people quoted in this documentary. We have used team awning space( and do currently ) but we have run karts independently too depending on funds .
I do think when people start in karting they can be a bit naive ,I know we were , and they get suckered in by sometimes slightly unscrupulous service suppliers be it teams , kart part suppliers etc so I think the industry as a whole needs to look at itself a bit - but so do those parents of the very youngest karters who don't set out with an aim about what they want to achieve and just whose aim is it ? is it the parent or the child ? are you there to have fun or to win at all costs ? What does it teach our kids if we just throw money at them to fulfill our own ambitions vicariously . You see, there lots of questions that we all need to be asking of the whole karting community as there is no one single answer about why costs / expenditure seems to get out of control and eventually squeeze out some people who undoubtedly have ability but without the fat wallet .
And don't get me started about sponsors, very rose tinted that one !- how many of these kids with "sponsors " have truly independent sponsors that aren't actually daddy's or mummy's company or someone with a close connection. You don't get sponsors unless you already have money to throw at karting and can show results even with a modicum of racing ability/ talent. The best sponsorship we had was through NatSka .( where we started our karting- and that really is shoestring and the greatest grounding for learning to do it yourself - none of this Dad/ paid mechanic does the work and the kids just jump in and drive - the kids have to be able to do all the mecanic stuff too )They organised a scholarship to Super 1 for one of our boys which paid entry fees and fuel for every round not a lot of money but that was such a simple " leg up " to develop his race craft which has stood him in good stead and he can now compete with the best. i know live in an increasing consumer age and surely we don't have to spend tens of thousands of pounds to allow parents and children to do " bonding " that is ridiculous cos bonding could be a £2 football and a patch of the village green ( free ) for a kick about. Or can we only communicate with our children if we are spending loads of money on them ? Just my sixpence worth of opinion as I said it is complex and we all need to look at what we do .
