I cannot believe there are talent scouts out there for karting there is just no need, professional motorsport is lead by sponsorship, the teams need the money to put the karts/cars/bikes on the grid, like it or not the search at the moment in F1 will be for an indian and/or Chinese driver and a female because these are 3 huge untapped markets for sponsorship, as ron dennis saw the potential to SELL lewis as a product more than a racing driver.
it is easier to take a fairly good Chinese or indian driver and spend a relatively small amount on training them to be a superb driver than it is to take a super talented driver and try to pull in sponsorship to run him/her.
why not just take karting for the sport it is in itself ? why does it have to be a stepping stone to something else ? my son does karting at the moment because he likes it,he may even carry on doing it as an adult, but we do not have any asperations for him to be a professional racing driver and he wants to be a helicopter pilot (at the moment) but he is also very good at cricket.
I also think that young children don't really have a clue what they want to do when they are older but if you ask one at karting if he wants to be an f1 driver he will probably say yes, if you ask him during a game of football if he would like to play football in the premier league he would also say yes! but the reality for the vast majority of them is that they won't play ANY sport as a professional when they are adults
