We were in exactly the same situation as you 5 years ago- too big for cadets so got the ARK's test out of the way and went straight into Minimax at Rissy - did 6 races and got off the novice plate and then went to the 'Dragons Den' at TVKC the following year and won Rookie driver of the year and spent less than Ł5K all season using a knackered '07 chassis and a very average engine.
Rotax is a very steep learning curve and you can easiliy get sucked into spending lots of money- TKM is simplier
In the mean time give TYRO a try and gets his ARKs done.
Note once they start karting they will shed the weight
