I don't think it's simple mechanical engineering at all. Finding out the thermal conductivity of the different materials isn't that difficult but working out how that affects the performance of a kart is incredibly complex.

Testing only goes so far with what is probably a small difference in varying conditions and everything in the control of a component that is very susceptible to the placebo effect!

If everybody is doing something but nobody can explain why then it's probably because one person tried it and the rest followed. Obviously they all 'felt' that it was an improvement.
