The kart in 2nd place appears to have slowed considerably in mid chicane and the following concertina effect like on motorways caused the 4th & 5th man to touch. While it is up to the drivers to avoid contact it is also an assumption that karts will be at racing speed most of the time and the further back in the 'queue' the more unsighted you can become. After contact 4th accelerated and 5th slowed with front wheel in front of 4th rear wheel and was flipped over. The quality of the film is not that clear but it does appear there are no plastic side pods but only triangular 'wheel' protectors on some, maybe nothing on others. There is also an apparent speed and grip difference between the karts.

Just maybe the plastic encrusted karts of today do have some justification. Never really thought of them this way.

Had something like this happen in 1968 at Rissington, but then the aluminum rear axle snapped and no overturn. 1968 no weight limit. All things tried to save weight. 14 to 15 BHP engines, 3 inch wide Carlisle tyres and karts the size of today's cadets. Real fun.
