Simon's right, of course but, don't forget, he's talking about 2 effects at once:-

1) The effects of more or less 'toe'
2) The effects of more or less Ackerman effect.

The point to consider is that, if you move between various holes on the sub axle, you MUST reset your tracking (Toe) as that change will alter it. Changing the Ackerman WILL alter the 'toe', thus you MUST reset it or you won't know if the 'change' in handling is because of the changed Ackerman or the changed 'toe'..

Finally, this is one of the areas of most confusion in karting: 'Will X make my kart faster?'. if someone answers 'YES' then, depending on what it is, it's probably WRONG simply because they don't know how your kart is NOW.

For example. Moving weight from the front to the rear of the karts. Let's assume that there is a PERFECT weight balance possible for your kart. You will hear loads of people telling you that moving the weight forward will improve handling in XYZ way. It's the WRONG advice! Why? Because if your weight IS too far forward then moving it forward MAY make things worse..... BUT if it's already too far back, taking it further forward will make it better..... unless you go so far forward that you have 'past' the optimum position and are now making things worse. Thus moving the weight forward MAY make the hand better OR worse. What matters is how it was BEFORE you changed it! If the person replying doesn't know how your kart is now or hasn't asked how it is, then you MUST take simplistic advice ('do this to make X better') with a pinch of salt! E.g.:-

* Fit a stiffer axle for this effect
* Widen the track
* Increase the tyre pressures
* Move the weight
and so on

All of those (and many more) have an 'optimum' setting. The ideal direction you 'move' those is COMPLETELY dependent on where the are NOW,.

At best, it will only be right 50% of the time!

Ian
