have to take slight issue with "official price controls don't work", for in relation to karting the precedent already proved it can work; the afforementioned "100 Britain" class was introduced in 1976 with a strict price limit of Ł165 each for chassis and engine.No extic" materials permitted etc. additionally chassis and engines needed to be of UK manufacture which inevitability got traditional chassis builders behind it and even motivated the world's largest racing car gearbox manufacturer to get involved in manufacturing an engine which dominated the class for years. the class ran a rock hard, skinny and quitenastily agricultural american "carlisle" tyre, the gawky look putting some off, however in 1986, the Bridgestone YBN became the control tyre and the class flourished further, dragging competitors away from the massive and more expensive 100 National class in their droves to become by far the biggest class; no tuning was allowed, engines ran a standard tillotson carb with a 19mm restrictor to keep revs, engine wear and subsequent cost down.

sadly, for reasons inexplicable, while the class was at it's peak, the MSA permitted the use of Italian engines in the class, costs spiralled and the class died. a case of brown envelopes changing hands at Colnbrook house perhaps? With the antics of messrs rifkind and straw in the news this week nothing would surprise me..............alan did a good job of resurrecting the SPIRIT of the class with 100 UK (and a phenominal amount of cash) later to be called Formula TKM, however the outrageous price of engine spares. only possible in a monopoly was always something of a TKM "stealth tax", they were just too late with TAG engines and now that class too has had its day.

Personally i'm greatly encouraged with this IKR thing and something I tripped over the other day called F100; this is karters voting with their feet. Theres hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of up until recently, reduntant 100cc gear out there and from posts on here people seem to enjoy driving them far more than any MAX. be interesting to watch it develop.
