Just to clarify the novice tyre situation, I was stood on the grid just prior to the race start and noticed hat that particular kart had its wet tyres mounted in the wrong direction which was popular at one time to keep the wets cool in mildly damp conditions by retaining some moisture rather than dispelling as much as possible until outlawed by the regulations that state that tyres must be run in the marked rotation direction.
I pointed this out to his father who seemed unconcerned so maybe there is more to the exclusion than a millimeter or so!
