Of you just want the video footage for training then you could look at buying the mini cams or spy cams available from ebay for Ł10 - Ł15 each.
You could fit one to his helmet, one on the front of the kart and then you would see the racing lines and any head movements.
The quality will be nowhere near the go-pro but good enough for looking at lines through the corners from one lap to the next,
