Crankcase are machined as pairs to ensure the main bearing bores are perfectly concentric with the crank centre line and that the barrel mounting face and hence bore is perfectly normal to the crank centre line. The crankcase halves are thus marked as a matching pair with the same ident on each half.

NOT good practice to use mismatched crankcase halves !!!
