You have to treat karting as a sport to enjoy not as an investment for the future. Same with any sport really - only a very few will make a good living from it.
If you go to the Autosport show, you will see a lot of Universities offering courses in various aspects of motorsport so there are opportunities to stay involved without being a driver.
